The Gateway Outdoor Learning Center is delighted to announce that Discovery Day 2024 will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 10am – 3pm.
As in previous years, Discovery Day will be held at our location adjacent to Conneaut Middle School on Gateway Avenue. Last year’s event was the largest turnout in our organization’s history with over 300+ families attending!
About Discovery Day
For over 11 years, the Gateway Outdoor Learning Center has hosted its annual Discovery Day event. This event is free to the community and provides opportunities for children and their families to experience hands-on learning about the natural world that goes beyond the classroom. This event supports the mission of the Outdoor Learning Center to provide an educational space to inspire wonder, understanding and connection to the outdoors.

Our Mission:
The Gateway Outdoor Learning Center is a 501-3C non profit corporation whose mission is to provide a nature preserve that will inspire wonder, understanding and connection to the natural world through environmental learning.
Discovery Day Impact:
My first experience with the OLC was as a participant in Discovery Day. Students and other visitors stopped by my station to learn about bees; both honey bees and native bees. After talking a bit, many people visited the pollinator garden, now realizing that the bees were providing an important service and were not interested in stinging them on sight! Children especially seemed to feel more comfortable in the garden after learning more about bees. The Outdoor Learning Center has become a wonderful asset to the local and surrounding communities.
Rosemary Burns, Master Gardener
I have been associated with the OLC for many years. I have seen the organization grow and mature as an educational and experiential destination.
The partnership with the Conneaut School system is unique in Ashtabula County, and fills a void in most school curriculums when it comes to outdoor science training.
Their Discovery Day event provides children and school-aged students with a summer opportunity to get hands-on learning in science, botany, and other nature related disciplines.
